    May 22, 2018, 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM @ Public pedestrian bridge between Atria Senior Living and Powermill Square.

    What? Watch the river for just 10 minutes to count river herring swimming upstream to spawn. With 2 dams removed from the river early last year, native river herring are once again able to return from the Atlantic Ocean to spawn. As a result of the monitoring efforts of last year's 200+ volunteers, the Mass. Division of Marine Fisheries estimates that more than 1,500 river herring spawned in the newly opened section of the river. How? First, sign up for one or more time slots (http://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090448abae29abf58-shawsheen). There are 3 morning slots (7-11 am), 3 midday slots (11-3 pm), and 3 after school/work slots (3-7 pm) for every day of the spawning run. Show up any time during the period you sign up for and watch the river for just 10 minutes. The more counts we get, the better the estimate of the spawning run size will be.

  5. Phillips Academy Orchestras in Concert

    May 25, 2018, 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM @ Cochran Chapel, Phillips Academy

    The Phillips Academy Department of Music presents the Academy Chamber and Symphony Orchestras in concert. The Amadeus Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Elizabeth Aureden, will perform John Rutter's "Suite for Strings." Written in 1973, "Suite for Strings" is based on well-known English Folk Songs. The Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Derek Jacoby, will perform Schubert's "Overture to Rosamunde" and Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue," which began as an idea on a train trip to Boston. Senior Ruide Wang, piano, will be the soloist. The Academy Chamber Orchestra, also under the direction of Dr. Jacoby, will perform works by Herbert, Mahler, and Strauss as well as Brett Abigaña's "Prayer for Strings." Abigaña is currently on the faculty at Boston University Academy, and is the co-founder and Associate Director of the Boston Composers' Coalition, a non-profit group of composers dedicated to the creation, performance, and dissemination of new American music.

    Join the Andover Trails Committee in a guided silent hike (also know as walking meditation) of the Goldsmith Woodlands every Monday from 9-10 am. Start the week right with a hike out to Bessie’s Point in this beautiful and serene AVIS reservation. Please wear footwear appropriate for the woods and bring water or coffee. Because this hike series is focused on the quiet enjoyment of nature, we are respectfully requesting not to bring dogs or children under 10.
