  4. GHOST: An Evening with Retired FBI Special Agent Michael R. McGowan

    Retired FBI Special Agent, Michael R. McGowan, and New York Times bestselling author and playwright, Ralph Pezzullo, teamed up to co-author GHOST – My Thirty Years as an FBI Undercover Agent, a fascinating memoir recapping McGowan's 30+ years with the FBI. Over the course of his career, McGowan worked more than 50 undercover cases, an unusually large number in FBI circles. He spent the majority of those years working undercover against some of the most dangerous, sophisticated, and notorious criminal organizations and individuals in the world. The book’s film rights have been optioned to Sylvester Stallone’s new production company, Balboa Productions, for development as a feature film.     Water is both the stuff of mystery and an essential part of everyday life. In the face of climate change, water is becoming too scarce and too plentiful. Water bans, flooding and erosion are increasingly common as this life-giving resource seems to turn against us. Get reacquainted with water and learn simple methods to capture, reuse and slow storm water and runoff. In this two-hour workshop, Trevor Smith of Land Escapes Design will discuss rain harvesting and rain gardens as ways to make the most of every drop.

  16. Peking and the Mystics: Vintage Vocals

    Enjoy an afternoon of 'Vintage Vocals' performed by the a cappella group, Peking and the Mystics. Formed by alumni of Tufts University and its a cappella singing group, the Beelzebubs, Peking and the Mystics has toured nationally and internationally, including trips to the Far East and South America. They've recorded four albums, appeared on television and radio, and in print media. The group's eclectic repertoire, comprising original arrangements by PATM members themselves, features vintage vocals from such genres as swing, jazz, doo wop and pop music, representing every decade from the 1930s to the 2000s. The members are Gene Blake, of Andover, on tenor 2; Andrew Cranin, of Brewster, on baritone 1; Chris Parker, of Ipswich, on bass; David Pratt, of Wellesley, on tenor 1, and Tim Vaill, of Andover, on baritone 2.

  19. The Clock in the Painting: Art Lecture by Bob Frishman

    Bob Frishman of Bell-Time Clocks has been collecting fine art images which have a clock for many years. From Van Gogh to Dali, Titian, Homer, Magritte, Hopper and Rockwell, these artworks are often familiar to art lovers but have not often been viewed from this perspective. Bob will show images from the past 500 years and discuss the history of clocks. Bob has repaired, restored and sold antique clocks for more than thirty-eight years. In 1992, he founded Bell-Time Clocks, named after a Harper's Weekly engraving by Winslow Homer depicting New England mill buildings and workers. Having scaled back his repair and selling activities, he now devotes most of his time to research, writing, lecturing, and conference organizing. He created and organized the 2017 Horology in Art symposium at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston.

  21. Courageous Conversations: White Fragility

    In her groundbreaking and timely book, White Fragility: Why It's So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism, antiracist educator, Robin DiAngelo, deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility. Referring to the defensive moves that white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt, and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. DiAngelo explores how white fragility develops, how it protects racial inequality, and what we can do to engage more constructively. The program will begin with a short video of Robin DiAngelo talking about white fragility, followed by a facilitated discussion led by Gail Forsyth-Vail of the Unitarian Universalist Association. All are welcome, even if they've not read the book. A collaboration of Memorial Hall Library, Courageous Conversations, North Parish Racial Justice Team and Showing Up for Racial Justice.

  27. Waterfalls of the White Mountatins: An Evening with Author Bruce Bolnick

    Come for a guided tour of the beautiful Waterfalls of the White Mountains with author Bruce Bolnick, including photo visits to popular favorites, roadside gems, backcountry treasures, great swimming holes, and other scenic treasures of the north country. The presentation also features anecdotes about production of the book, plus hiking tips, and some fascinating history of the White Mountain region. Bruce Bolnick is lead author of Waterfalls of the White Mountains: 30 Hikes to 100 Waterfalls. The recently released 3rd Edition (Countryman Press, 2019) is a major revision to the hiking guide that first came out in 1990. Aside from his professional work as an economist, Bruce has been hiking in the Whites for decades. He is also a Volunteer Naturalist for the Appalachian Mountain Club, and volunteer Nature Guide at Mass Audubon’s Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary in Topsfield. Copies of the book will be available for purchase.
